If you take classes at our Wakefield studio, then chances are you have been lucky enough to be in class with this member of the month; Dave Nelson! Dave usually crushes at least 1 (sometimes 2) classes a day and he always shows up ready to work.
There is no doubt that he motivates everyone around him when he is in class; instructors try to find new creative ways to challenge him while other clients are definitely pushing themselves harder to stay on his level.
Our Wakefield community is very lucky to have Dave as part of our crew and we are excited to have him as our Member of the Month!
How did you first hear about SF:
I first heard about Sweat Fixx in 2017 from a friend. I went to classes sporadically for a while, but in the past year I’ve started going almost every day (I got addicted a little bit). Prior to going to Sweat Fixx, my exercise consisted of running and going to the gym. The issue for me was that I wasn’t sticking with this consistently. I would do it for a few weeks, and then not have the motivation to go for a run or the gym for a few weeks. I was looking for something different that would be both a cardio and strength challenge, and Sweat Fixx was exactly what I needed!
What keeps you coming back:
I love striving to get better each time I’m in studio. That may mean trying to set a new PR, better form, lifting heavier, or just trying to keep up with others in the studio. The competition is great!
What’s one thing you look forward to every time you come to class:
There is no easy class that you know exactly what to expect. I’ve never left a class saying that it wasn’t challenging or that it was easy. I love that each class and instructor push me to try my best at doing something new, and it’s a huge sense of accomplishment when you finish.
What motivates you to be stronger:
Part of my motivation is self-started to do my best, but a bigger part of it is the class atmosphere. Both instructors and other people in the class motivate me to be better! Instructors are amazing at putting together classes that are challenging while at the same time motivating you to keep going. I’m always trying to keep up with someone who’s rowing faster or lifting heavier.
When you aren’t crushing it on the rower or mat, where can we find you?
When I’m not at Sweat Fixx I am with my family….amazing wife (and former member of the month) Kristen, our 3 kids, Cole, Garrett, and Annie, and our new dog, Mack. I love coaching all of my kids sports (except hockey….not one wants me teaching their kids how to skate!). Aside from family time, I try to get out golfing as much as I can.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
There are a lot of foods and drinks that would fall under this category for me. Right now as summer wraps up fried seafood, beer, and ice cream have been recent favorites!
What are you most proud of accomplishing since you first came to Sweat Fixx?
In general, I’m proud that I can honestly say I tried my best in every class. You get out of the classes what you put in and I’ve tried to put my best effort into each class. This isn’t always easy, but instructors and the class atmosphere hold you accountable to keep trying. More specifically, I set a goal for myself to get to 500 classes by July. Having this goal kept me accountable for being in class, even on days I would have rather slept in.
One tip that you would give to someone who is coming to SF for the first time?
Keep coming back. The classes are not easy and the first few times on the rower will be tough, but you’ll quickly notice improvement in how fast you’re rowing, your form, and the ability to lift heavier. For me the best way to do this was to set a tangible goal….I tried to take a certain number of classes each month. However you do it, if you keep coming back you’ll see improvement quickly.
Anything else?
Overall just very impressive what Elise and her team have built. Classes are very inclusive, whether you’re new or been going to Sweat Fixx for years. It’s a great community environment and each class brings something new that continues to challenge you.
